Unlock Your Potential, Overcome Challenges, and Discover the Joy of Running
Early Connection to Running
I was born and raised in Ghana, where soccer was the main activity in my neighborhood. I didn’t run as a child but spent countless hours playing soccer with friends, simply enjoying the camaraderie and the joy of being active.
Transition to Distance Running and Ultras
Running came into my life later when I moved to NYC and started working for NYRR. I took on shorter races but quickly jumped into the deep end, signing up for my first 60k without ever running a marathon. That race was grueling – 9 loops in Central Park. By lap 6, I was ready to quit. I even went to the bag check to grab my things and leave, but instead, I saw a fresh pair of shoes in my bag, changed into them, and decided to keep going. Finishing that race was a defining moment for me – it proved I could conquer anything if I put my mind to it. That 60k became an annual tradition for me, running it for six consecutive years to continue pushing my limits.
Professional Running and Coaching
I studied Electrical Engineering at City College of NYC, but my passion for running grew during my time working at NYRR. After graduating, I realized that coaching was my true calling. I wanted to use my experience to help others unlock their full potential through running. My engineering background helps me see each runner’s journey as unique – while we may all aim for the finish line, the path to getting there is deeply personal for everyone.
Personal Relationship with Running
Running has become more than just miles for me – it’s a tool to overcome life’s challenges. Over the years, my relationship with running has evolved from chasing races to being more intentional, adding meaning to every step. Running has taught me to embrace slow progress if I want to endure for the long haul and to pivot when life changes, understanding that tough times are temporary if you stay the course.
From Soccer Fields to Ultramarathons: Coach Ben's Journey to Inspiring Runners Everywhere
Current Role and Impact
Through my work with the community at On, I’ve been able to reach and inspire more runners, which I’m incredibly grateful for. Some of my proudest moments come from watching clients overcome challenges – injuries, personal struggles, or mental blocks – and cross the finish line of their races. Witnessing their persistence and growth is a constant reminder of why I do what I do.
